Exciting Times for Photojournalists

Cheers to the Future!

This is the first day after the launch of the HUBlog. So Cheers! It’s been a long time coming.

This is also the first time I have taken and used my new HD video camera. Quite apt I would say, or could it be a harbinger of things to come?

The HV20 is the HD video camera Canon touts as being the photojournalist’s tool of choice. A video camera for a photojournalist you say? That’s blasphemous! But wait a minute. That’s how some photographers referred to the use of the digital camera in a bygone era.

The tools may change with time, what’s important is the adherence to the core principles and ethics of phototojournalism. What’s wrong to using the fastest motor drive (at 30fps) and getting that one image that will tell the tale? Add to that, what’s wrong if now, as a photojournalist, I also capture sound and moving images and put it all together to tell my story?

These are exciting times for me as a photojournalist. This is a new tool and a new way of telling stories. But adapt, I must. For in adaptation lies my future. News space at my newspaper (like in all other newspapers) is shrinking to ad space. But there is opportunity online. Cyberspace is limited only by creativity. Out there, I have the opportunity to tell much more than I could ever dream of in print.

So yes, my newspaper has seen the future and I have the opportunity to make that happen. You bet I’m gonna take it. Photojournalism’s very future depends on that transition.

Watch this space as I delve deeper into that murky future.
